What could be edgier than watching five
female singer-songwriters blow the roof off an 18th-century Unitarian
meetinghouse? Catch Indiegrrl Showcase II on Thursday night at the 1794
Meetinghouse, home of North Quabbin's Center for the Performing Arts
in the village of New Salem.
Relax in the pews and praise folk-rocker
Lauren Flaherty of Boston; bluegrass-inspired Patty Keough of Winthrop;
ardent feminista Arjuna Greist of Northampton; contemplative crooner
Susan Souza of Towson, Md.; and blues-pop belter Lisa Martin of Ludlow.
Hear all five for just $10.
The show is part of the summer performance
series at the 1794 Meetinghouse. (Think of it as a micro-Tanglewood
that's cheaper, closer, and traffic-free.) Set on the town green of
a classic New England village, the white clapboard building hosts touring
artists in every musical genre. Acts take the stage into September.
Buy tickets online or at the New Salem General Store.
1794 Meetinghouse, 26 South Main St.,
New Salem. 978-544-5200. www.1794meetinghouse.org. About 80 miles or
less than 2 hours from Boston. Take Route 2 west (over 70 miles) to
the exit for Route 202. Go south on Route 202 for 5.1 miles and turn
left at the sign that says ``New Salem Center." (Just past this
intersection is the New Salem General Store.) The Meetinghouse is about
a half-mile ahead on the right.

Indiegrrl Showcase
This coffeehouse on the Southern end
of Forsyth Park is one of the only places in the area to glimpse up-and-coming
acoustic songwriting talent. This quartet of regional female artists
is affiliated with Indiegrrl, the world’s largest organization
dedicated to promoting independent female musicians – and this
same lineup will also appear at notable Ga. venues like Eddie’s
Attic in Atlanta, and Club 1244 in Columbus. Each artist must pass muster
from a committee of their peers to play sanctioned events such as this,
so taken together, these four provides a nice snapshot of what’s
bubbling out of the Peach State asphalt these days.
Local songstress (and organizer) Lauren
Lapointe appears as expected, playing a selection of stark, original
material off her 2 CDs, along with: Gainesville’s Julia Carroll,
who transitioned into “hard folk” after years in rock and
metal bands; Vicki Blankenship (also from Gainesville), Indiegrrls’s
CEO, dubbed the “Female James Taylor” by the Raleigh daily;
and Columbus’ Nicki Sutherland, a native South African, who moved
from there to here, and from classical piano to folk guitar.
Free to ALL-AGES, with a suggested donation
of $5 - $10. Sat. (4/29/06), 7:30 pm, The Sentient Bean.

eMediaWire ~ 11/3/05
(PRWEB) November 3, 2005 -- Friday, November
18th, the 2005 Indiegrrl Tour will be making a stop in Louisville, KY
with a show at the Alternative. Performers will include local Indiegrrl
Brigid Kaelin, Sue Jeffers from Kent OH, Vicki Blankenship from North
Carolina, and Shelley Miller from Chicago IL. Show time is 9:00 p.m.,
admission $10.
Indiegrrl was founded by Holly Figueroa
in May of 1998 as a forum for information, networking, and conversation
about independent music from a female perspective. It started with about
10 women talking about what it was like to be a woman in the industry.
It continued on that way for about 6 months, gaining a few people here,
and a few there.
In November of '98, Holly decided to
go to the East Coast for her first tour away from Seattle. She told
the list members (there were about 30 at that time), and someone suggested
that a bunch of people get together and do a mini tour. They laughingly
called it the "indiegrrl tour" and announced it to three mailing
lists: Folk DJ-L, folkvenu, and folkbiz. Within 24 hours, Holly had
300 messages in her mailbox, from women clamoring to be on this little
upstart of a tour. That was when we all realized that there was a need
for this type of network between women.
Currently Indiegrrl has over 1300 members
internationally, making Indiegrrl the largest organization of its kind
in the world. The Indiegrrl list welcomes women performers, DJs, managers,
and booking agents, as well as men interested in women's role in the
independent music industry.
Indiegrrl welcomes, with open arms, all
genres of music and has representatives from just about every genre.
At this time, singer/songwriters dominate the performer roster because
more acoustic musicians tour than full bands, and Indiegrrl's network
caters to touring musicians. Likewise, since Indiegrrl's inception,
the folk community, more than any other genre, has embraced it.
Indiegrrl is a not-for-profit organization.
Indiegrrl does not affiliate itself with major labels or indies that
are distributed by major labels. We are self-funded and affiliate with
small, independent DIY companies.
