The Indiegrrl list began in May of 1998 as a forum for information, networking and conversation about independent music from a female perspective. The Indiegrrl list welcomes women performers, dj's, managers, and booking agents, as well as men interested in women's role in the independent music industry. Indiegrrl is now the largest cooperative of women in the music industry in the US, with over 700 members nationwide.
Since the inception of the free mailing list, Indiegrrl has grown into an independent record label, releasing a compilation CD in June of 99, and this, their second compilation in August of 2000. The organization has hosted 2 national tours, (with the third one taking place in October 2000), hundreds of events across the US, and is planning another national tour for fall of 2000. Indiegrrl also books and provides talent for the Oxygen Media Tank Tour, and holds benefit concerts for regional and national organizations, such as Home Alive, Men’s Rape Prevention Project, Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, Independent Media Center, and many more.
Indiegrrl accepts no corporate sponsorship, and relies on the generosity of its members to promote showcases, benefits, and events under the Indiegrrl banner. Indiegrrl ITA members in turn receive discounts from reputable industry related companies including CD Baby.com, Hostbaby.com, Oasis CD and Cassette Duplication, Rockrgrl Magazine, Degyshop.com, and many regional companies.
