WOMEN'S INTERNET MUSIC COOPERATIVE TO STAGE 12-CITY TOUR
Lilith Fair performers Antigone Rising and Rachael Sage, ASCAP award winner Liz Graham and NYC blues-rock queen Halley DeVestern are just a few of more than 30 top independent female musical artists joining forces on the 1999 Indiegrrl Summer Tour. For twenty-four days, beginning in New York City on July 1, varying lineups from Indiegrrl's roster will bring some of today's best independent music to twelve cities in seven (mostly) East Coast states.
To coincide with the Tour, Indiegrrl Records is releasing a compilation CD with tracks from sixteen of Indiegrrl's most accomplished artists (available in June, on request).
The widespread promotion and distribution of independent music made possible by the Internet has suddenly given musicians the ability to take charge of their own careers and succeed without the major record labels. The 1999 Indiegrrl Summer Tour may well be the first significant real-world manifestation of this revolutionary change in the music industry.
Media support is coming from Billboard, Seventeen Magazine, local print outlets such as Newsday and the Hartford Advocate, and Indie-friendly radio stations everywhere.
Indiegrrl, founded in 1998 by Seattle musician Holly Figueroa, has no genre limitations. Punk bands, rock artists, pop singers and traditionalists from (at last count) four nations have all contributed to Indiegrrl's phenomenal creative energy. In addition to GrammyŠ-nominated songwriters and award-winning performers, Indiegrrl's membership includes Indie music web masters, managers, bookers, publishers, DJs and nationally known writers, all dedicated to the cause of creating and improving opportunities for independent women in music. In less than one year, Indiegrrl has grown from a simple Internet mailing list into an international organization with over 200 members. Its consistent vision and cooperative nature have resulted in a series of initiatives, including:
