INDIEGRRL TO HOLD BENEFIT FOR HOME ALIVE
Some of the nations premiere female musicians will take to the stage at the Sit and Spin, July 5, 2000 to benefit HOME ALIVE. Artists scheduled to perform include AIKO SHIMADA, EMBER SWIFT, TIGER ZANE, KYM TUVIM, THREE MARTINI LUNCH and HOLLY FIGUEROA. This concert will highlight not only the talent of these performers, but will also alert people to the ongoing work of Seattle based HOME ALIVE. This performance is the beginning of a building alliance between these organizations. "This benefit concert is way overdue", says Figueroa, founder of Indiegrrl. "Indiegrrl has done benefits for dozens of similar organizations across the country in the past two years, but now, its time to bring it home."
Indiegrrl began as a mailing list set up in May of 1998 as a forum for information, networking and conversation about independent music from a female perspective. The list welcomes women and men interested in women's role in the independent music industry. Since its inception, Indiegrrl has gone on to be much more than a mailing list, with concerts and tours across the country, as well as a second compilation CD coming out of the record label in August 2000 www.indiegrrl.com
INDIEGRRL CONTACT HOME ALIVE was founded by Seattle's arts and music
communities as a grass-roots response to the rape and murder of
Mia Zapata. We believe violence prevention is a community
responsibility as well as an individual issue. Our work in self
defense encourages everyone to recognize their entitlement to the
basic human right to live free from violence and hate. We are
committed to promoting awareness through community events and
campaigns in addition to offering affordable and accessible self
defense classes and education. Indiegrrl Benefit for HOME ALIVE
includes Aiko Shimada with Dave Carter on trumpet, Mark
Collins on upright bass, Steve Moore on trombone and keyboards, and Eric
Eagle on drums. Seattle Weekly calls her music "ethereal free-folk", and
The Stranger describes her as "a different sort of singer, one with a gift for
simmering sophisticated musical and lyrical ideas down to a taut, powerful
minimalism."
Her 1998 indie-debut, cited as a Top 12 Independent Release by The
Performing Songwriter Magazine, features a top-notch ensemble including
Michael Manring on bass (Michael Hedges, John Gorka) and Julie Wolf on
accordion (Ani DiFranco, Laura Love). She has toured both coasts,
appearing with nationally touring artists including: Caroline Aiken,
Peter Mulvey, Barbara Kessler, Lori B and Karen Pernick in venues &
festivals ranging from The Tractor Tavern and Bumbershoot in her
hometown of Seattle to The Sweetwater (Mill Valley, CA) and Club Passim
(Boston).

underscores the raw passionate emotions that
comes through the lyrics, what I think holds
up the flag as a talent to watch out for is her

attitude to her music." Holly started wowing national audiences in 1999 after years of local Seattle concerts. She has toured extensively throughout the US, greeting fans everywhere with her refreshing style of hybrid folk and blues, and sharing stages with artists such as Caroline Aiken, Barbara Kessler, and Colleen Sexton. --"Three Chord Plea (first release) is charmingly blunt, as on "What I Miss", to harrowing, mood evoked on "A Thousand Times."
