1. How did Indiegrrl begin?

Indiegrrl was formed in May of 1998 as a mailing list for women in the independent music industry. It started with about 10 women talking about what it was like to be a woman in the industry. It continued on that way for about 6 months, gaining a few people here, and a few there.... In November of 98, the founder Holly Figueroa, decided to go to the east coast for her first tour away from Seattle. She told the list members (there were about 30 at that time) and someone suggested that a bunch of people get together and do a mini tour. They laughingly called it the "indiegrrl tour" and announced it to 3 mailing lists, Folk DJ-L, folkvenu and folkbiz...within 24 hours, Holly had 300 message in her mailbox, women clamoring to be on this little upstart of a tour. That was when we all started to realize that there was a need for this type of network between women.

10. Why all the folkies on the list and on the first compilation CD?

We are slowly becoming more diverse, but it is true, that singer/songwriters dominate the performer roster. There are a few reasons why acoustic, singer songwriter, folkies are more prevalent in Indiegrrl. The big one is that more acoustic musicians tour than full bands, and Indiegrrls network caters to touring musicians.

Another one is that the original tour announcement in December of 1998 went out to the folk community, and ever since, the folk community has embraced indiegrrl, unlike the blues, R&B, country, rock, jazz, electronica, etc...or any other community. To this point, we have not gone out and solicited members...they kinda find us. We are, however, going to be having booths at different conferences and festivals this year, so maybe more genres will be represented in 2000...but we can't drag in people who don't want to be involved. We welcome, with open arms, all types and genres of music, and do have a couple of representatives of just about every genre.

In reference to the compilation...way back before the first tour was even thought of, some of the members of Indiegrrl decided to put together a compilation cd. The original intention of the compilation was to put a few songs on a cdr's and distribute them between members so we could hear each others work. There was no plan, no forethought, and no selection process whatsoever. When the tour came about and started getting national attention, we needed something to promote the tour with. Many of the tour performers were on the compilation, so it seemed logical to get it mass duplicated.

11. Speaking of the compilation, what is Indiegrrl Records, and how can I get on a compilation?

Indiegrrl Records is a not for profit label, with a goal of releasing several compilations per year. You must be an ITA Member in order to be considered for a compilation CD. The benefits from the proceeds of the compilations go back into Indiegrrl Records to pay for distribution of the record to radio. When those inital needs have been met, Indiegrrl then donates the proceeds to charity.

15. But I'm so cute and perky...and I have such a great press kit...and...and...and...why wasn't I chosen to perform?

Indiegrrl has a strict policy to consider music first, well above marketability or appearance. When you send a press kit, it is instantly seperated out...CD's or tapes in one pile, press kit in another. Then, a committee of 5 or more industry professionals gather to review the submissions...if the music is exceptional (in our very subjective opinion) we then review the press kit. If it is not exceptional, the submission is discarded.

Anyone can send a second submission when they have new materials.
